Modern India: Central Issues in Economy, Law, Politics and Society

International Summer School 2007

The Johannes Kepler University of Linz (Institute of Societal and Social Policy), the Jawaharlal Nehru University (Global Studies Programme (CSSS)) and the Austrian Association of East Asian Studies are organising a joint international and academic Summer School in New Delhi, India.


Course description:

The programme comprises a three-week course (Monday to Friday, six units a day, total 90 units) and planed trips on the weekends (Old and New Delhi/Taj Mahal in Agra/Pink City, Jaipur/ Buddhist settlements in Dharamsala). During the last week a three-day trip to Varanasi, one of the most important cultural places for Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.

The following courses will be offered: (Details very soon)

  • India’s way from tradition to modernization
  • Impact of social and cultural change in modern India and South-Asia
  • Global and local processes of economy – opportunities and risks
  • Global economic influences on labour and society
  • The triangle: Economy, Politics and Society from the perspective of law
  • Development of political economy in relation to international institutions


The courses mentioned above are regular courses offered by JNU at the graduate level. They have been specifically adapted for this Summer School by professors from JNU and will be held in block sessions.

The Summer School Programme will concluded with a written final exam giving students the opportunity to transfer credits to their home university.

Time and venue: Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, 1 (or 2) September until 30 September 2007 

Qualification requirements:

Students at universities (both graduate and undergraduate), universities of applied sciences, economics and various educational institutions as well as employees with international companies. Proficiency in English.

Accommodation:

Accommodation will be provided by the host institution in or around JNU campus
